Rain can trigger flash flooding downstream and landslides. Do not use a blue patch above you as proof that a gorge or waterfall route is safe.

Mauritius is compact, not uniform. The coast can be clear while the uplands are wet, windy and inside cloud. Plan for the trail in front of you.
Before leaving
Make six checks.
This is general planning guidance. Each trail page adds route-specific hazards, access notes and official sources.
Wind and exposed ridges
Le Morne, Le Pouce and technical summits change quickly in strong wind. Exposure can make a short section the hardest part of the day.
Heat and ultraviolet exposure
Dry coastal mountains and open reserve tracks offer little shade. Start early, carry enough water and protect skin before the climb begins.
Navigation
Unmarked junctions, cloud and duplicate online tracks create false confidence. Download a reviewed route where one exists and keep a firm turnaround time.
Wet rock and water levels
A waterfall pool can change depth, current and debris after rain. Never jump or cross flowing water based on an old photo or review.
Access and closures
A route visible online may cross private land or be temporarily closed. Look for an official or land-manager notice and treat unknown access as unknown.
Emergency planning
Leave enough information to be found.
Tell someone the exact trail and route variant, the group size, the vehicle location and the time you will check in.
Save the emergency number
Mauritius Police lists 999 as an emergency number. Save it before you leave mobile coverage. An emergency number does not replace a route plan.

Set a turnaround time
Turn around for time, weather, water level or group confidence. A summit is optional. A safe return is the plan.

Opening hours, closure notices and access conditions can change after publication. Follow the official source linked from the trail guide.
