How we review our guides

Hiking Mauritius exists to help someone make a sound decision before they reach the trail. That makes source quality, uncertainty and accountable corrections part of the experience.

How every guide earns its place.

These rules apply to trail pages, map pins, future condition reports and every translated edition.

A source for the claim

Official land managers and government services come first. Named field experts and recent moderated reports add context where no authority publishes the detail.

Uncertainty stays visible

Approximate coordinates, unverified approaches and changing access are labelled. We do not polish uncertainty out of the page.

Facts have review dates

Every source records when it was checked. Field checks and official-source checks are separate dates because they answer different questions.

Difficulty is explained

We separate physical effort, technical movement, navigation, exposure and water risk, then explain the decision in plain language.

AI has a narrow role

AI may compare documents, structure notes and prepare translation drafts. It cannot invent access, geometry, status, distance or a safety conclusion.

Commerce stays disclosed

The site is independent of every tour operator, guide company and booking platform. A future widget or affiliate link will be labelled and kept separate from trail facts and ratings.

Meet the editorial team

Four words with fixed meanings.

Open

A current authority or land manager states that normal access is available.

Restricted

Permission, hours, fees, a route boundary or another condition limits access.

Closed

A current authoritative notice says not to enter.

Unknown

We do not have enough current evidence to state that access is open.

Anyone can submit a dated trail report. Reports enter a private review queue and never change a public access status automatically. Published corrections are recorded in the relevant guide's change history.

Report a trail change

Useful first. Commercial second.

Hiking Mauritius is a trail reference, with route information and source evidence available without a booking. A commercial operator appears here only as a named source when it has published useful field detail, and a source never settles an access fact or a difficulty rating on its own. If a guide or activity widget is introduced later, it will be clearly marked as commercial, it will link to an external service and it will never alter our access facts, difficulty ratings or editorial conclusions.

Photographs are sourced from the independently credited contributors below. We do not use Yanature photography. A trail without a verified, licensed photograph stays without one until a suitable image is available.

Images are resized and converted to WebP, with display crops that vary by screen. The credited licences apply to these versions too. Landscape photographs do not establish current trail access or conditions.
