South-west
Le Morne Brabant
A gentle opening track leads to a much steeper upper section where hands, balance and a calm head for exposure matter.
The honest take
Le Morne is often described as a moderate hike because the first section feels approachable. That description misses the upper mountain. The final section is steep, sun-exposed and intimidating for people who dislike heights. Turning around below the upper section is a sensible decision, not a failed hike.
Five-axis difficulty
See what makes it hard.
Is this hike right for you?
A good fit for
- First-time visitors who want one memorable mountain viewpoint
- Confident hikers who enjoy short scrambling
- Early starts and wide lagoon views
Think twice if
- Anyone uncomfortable with exposure
- Wet or very windy days
- Hikers without water or shoes with reliable grip
How the route unfolds
The approach
The lower trail is broad and rises steadily through dry vegetation. It gives you time to judge the heat, your pace and whether the group is comfortable.
The change in character
Past the easier section, the route steepens on rock. Hands become useful and the sense of exposure increases quickly.
The official end point
The visitor trail ends at the metal cross. Respect the viewpoint capacity and do not climb on the memorial.
Safety decisions
- Check the Le Morne Heritage Trust Fund notice before leaving.
- Do not enter during a heavy rain warning, torrential rain warning, Cyclone Class II or above, or a posted closure.
- Carry all drinking water because there is no water point on the mountain.
- Stay on the marked visitor trail and give descending hikers space on the upper section.
What to carry
- Shoes with reliable grip
- At least 1 to 1.5 litres of water per person
- Sun protection
- A small pack that leaves both hands free
